About the Designer
When you take a look at the sensual curves and graceful shapes of Finn Juhl’s work, you will be taken by surprise. It is difficult to realize that he had designed these awesome pieces almost 60-70 years ago. He is has become a pioneer in his own country. Finn Juhl along with his friends Hans Wegner, Danes Arne Jacobsen, Poul Kjaerholm, and Borge Mogensen for the introduction of Danish Modern in the Midcentury America. Albeit, he had planned on becoming an art historian, it was his father who persuaded him and made him attend Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts School of Architecture. He was so diligent that by 1934, he had managed to acquire a prestigious position with the popular architect Vilhelm Lauritzen. He then went to explore the movement of functionalism by creating all geometrical and clean looking buildings such as the broadcasting house Radiohuset. This serves as the pinnacle of Danish Architecture which now accommodates the Royal Danish Academy of Music. Juhl had the innate quality of being architecture. He started designing furniture like the Poet Sofa (1941) which was used in his own home that is located in Copenhagen. Juhl had the feeling that handicraft, furniture, and art completes the look of the house. The houses in his time were decorated with paintings from the Danish Painters of the time. At present, his house serves an early example of open-plan designs in which every room overlooks the garden. It is a part of Ordrupgaard Museum. He collaborated with Niels Vodder, the master cabinet maker in 1937. The pair created a buzz in the CabinetMakers’ Guild Exhibition in 1945 with the awesome expressive pieces of sculpture. One of the most recognized pieces that they designed was Model 45 Armchair. This design broke away from the tradition by separating itself the wooden frame from the upholstered space. Juhl made his debut in Good Design exhibit in MoMA in New York and Chicago, in the year 1951. During this time he was only 39 years old. He was representing Denmark in this exhibition and decorated the interior of a meeting hall in the headquarters of United Nations. A few years later, Juhl was asked to redesign the Asia and Europe air terminals by SAS. Finn Juhl hs not stopped winning awards even after his death. He won The Wallpaper Design Award in the year 2010 for his Baker Sofa (1951) in the Best Reissue Category.
